Autumn Hike: Mt. Bukhansan

I’m not ashamed to admit that my hiking experiences was non existent before this one. It was the last day Bukhansan Mountain opened for public before it temporarily closed on November 15-December 15 for fire-prevention and maintenance. It’s located just north of Seoul, so it’s very convenient if you just want to have a day hike close to the city—how hard can it be?—and that’s why I wasn’t taking this hike as seriously as I should’ve.

Bukhansan is a mountain of many peaks. There are several trails that leads to its peaks. In the end, I decided to hike the highest peak, Baegundae Peak. It said to serve the best view of ‘em all. The loop to Baegundae Peak and back is about 8 km. People said they can arrive at the top in just over two hours, so I expected the same for me.

The hike to the top is tough, yet rewarding. There weren’t many options to buy food and drinks when you start the hike. But you can always opt to pack your lunch and eat it along the hike—you’ll get plenty of opportunities to do this. Throughout the hike, you will find a little bit of everything here. At first, you’ll find yourself walking on a slight incline and the route started to get tougher from there. It’ll be best if you have hiking boots but you can get away with a decent pair of sneakers.

In the end, it took me around 6-7 hours to reach the top and go back, almost two times compared the average. Though, it's no wonder as me and my friends took a break in almost every turns. That just showed how out of shape we are. But, in my opinion, just enjoy the hike and savour the scenery slowly.

Whether you’re a pro or just hitting your first trail, Bukhansan is a quintessential that must be checked off the list when you’re in Seoul.

Are we still friends?

It's been more than 4 years since the last time I blogged. Was it second year or last year of high school? Now that I'm in college, probably the way I wrote then and now would differ. I'm trying to keep most of my past posts. Now that we became more self-conscious, some might think that middle to high school times was an embarrassing phase. I do agree, but not everything was as mortifying as that. Every seconds of it was precious, so I'm trying to preserve it through the posts.

College was a true turbulence. Throughout all the pressure, I was like an ever-changing piece of clay molded and shaped into something. I'm sure it helped shape my character—into the better or not, I'm not sure. One thing that I'm sure of was it changed a few of my interests. which was very unfortunate and regrettable. I sold my LC-A+ and Diana Mini, used the money to buy Kindle, and stepped on it. So that's the end of my analogue camera hobby and could be one of the reasons I read less books. Still, I like to take pictures. I gave my old love, Canon 60D, some new friends, Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 USM and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, and candies—filters. I didn't play PC games anymore, though I'm now exploring mobile MMORPGs. There is one that I'm crazy of so maybe I'll write about it. I'm still and more into skincare and a little bit of makeup now.

Hopefully, after this semester—which means I'll have more spare times—I'll try to read more and write more.

El Clásico 1-3

Well there are all my opinions and don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Barca and always will but that is why it hurts so much more to see us fail. I know we are better than this and I also know that we have what it takes to turn it around. I hope that maybe today was a wake up call and that we can easily be beaten if we dont give our all. I hope this will inspire us to have a phenomenal performance against AC Milan. A performance where when all us cules watch we know it's the real Barca. I hope we can recover this weekend. Even though we don't need the points, we certainly need the confidence.

Stunning Siesta

I know the media will point out that it was a win against the bottom team, a team that is struggling and a team we should be beating. They’ll probably even highlight that defensively we weren’t top notch again and conceded two goals. Some would even suggest that this is yet another false dawn and that this is the false face of Arsenal. To all of that, I say stuff it. We won at the Madjeski Stadium by beating Reading 5-2. Our aim was to get three points and that’s what we did in emphatic fashion. Case closed.

Stunning 45

The boss threw up a surprise, as Theo started up front flanked by Podolski and Ox. Cazorla, Wilshere and Arteta continued in midfield as Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs and Szczesny all took their places as well. We started brightly and while there were a couple of early Reading half chances, we were dominant. Our passing and movement were potent and we were in a lethal mood as we raced into a 3-0 lead. Podolski opened the scoring after Gibbs’ dinked pass that the German controlled past two Reading defenders and fired home. Then came the Santi show as he notched two goals in quick succession. It was easily the best first half of the season for us. In the second half we dropped off a little after going 4-0 up around the hour mark when Cazorla scored again to complete his treble. Reading pulled two goals back from LeFondre and Kebe but Walcott halted any signs of a wobble with a fifth 10 minutes from time. Defensively both goals conceded could have been avoided but I’ll take the away win and the three points. A job well done.

Hat Trick Hero

Last night was Santi Cazorla’s first professional hat trick. Cazorla was brilliant against Reading. 1 assist, 3 goals from 4 shots on target, 7 successful dribbles and he created 6 goal-scoring opportunities for his teammates. I thought the magical little Spaniard looked rugged the past few weeks but he exploded back into form at the Madjeski. Santi is such an example for any young player. He always wants the ball and has two great feet. On song, he’s so hard to read and last night he reveled in the space between Reading’s defense and midfield. His first came after some good work by Gibbs on the left who beat the Reading right back and put in a cross that Santi headed home from close range. The second was a swivel and hooked finish after Theo’s cross was headed back to Cazorla by Gibbs. And the final was an easy tap home after good work from Wilshere and Podolski who fired in a low cross that left Santi with an open goal.

Central Theo

I wasn’t sure if Walcott would start against Reading. Not only did he start but he also got the chance he’s been craving, at center forward. I’ve had my doubts about Theo has a striker. Scoring goals as a winger means running in from wide positions and finding space on the flanks you can work from. In the middle, gaps are minimal and you have two central defenders to deal with and not just a slow left back. But Theo did very well in his first official game as an Arsenal striker. His movement and pace were brilliant. While he did forgo a couple of good situations, he scored a beautiful goal after being released on the right by Santi, cutting in past two defenders and curling a low shot home. Wenger says he was convinced to play Theo as a striker from “training sessions” and in a way I have a feeling AW is saying to him, well if you’re only going to sign a contract once you get a chance at center forward, then here you go. Now sign the thing!

Same Ol’ Defense

It’s harsh to criticize anyone after a good win but our defense was shoddy in parts. Gibbs had a brilliant game offensively as he laid on three assists but defensively he was caught out of position a couple of times. And he gave away the ball to Reading’s Tabb after attempting a lazy pass across our own half. Tabb beat a slipping Wilshere and released LeFondre for Reading’s first. The second Royals goal came when Robson-Kanu was given room and time to beat the offside trap and he picked out Kebe who fired low past Szczesny. We could have stopped both strikes and once again we made an individual error on a goal. The boys are trying harder but we just have to be sharper next time. There needs to be total concentration and even a sense of pride in keeping clean sheets.

Still Early

I don’t think we can completely say that we’re back to our best but there were signs of fluency and potency in the final third again. Theo’s pace means teams sit deeper which gives our midfield more room to maneuver. And we always thrive when there’s more space. Jury is still out on if Walcott will start there again but he’s doing his bit and that was his 11th goal of the season in all competitions. So there is an argument to give him a run. This win was important because for us it’s yet another step in a long marathon. We needed to build on that WBA game and the boss was quick to point out that while we did lose to Swansea, we have lost only one game in the last six where we beat Spurs but also had to travel to Villa and Everton. And while the results weren’t the very best, they weren’t that bad either. But that’s the past. We just have to continue in our current vein and keep picking up wins.

The Real Truth

It’s interesting to note that we’ve been supposedly in this massive crisis. Now I don’t think everything is fine and dandy. Far from it but the media loves to harp on our impending doom every year. But if you look at the hard facts, in our WORST START TO A SEASON UNDER WENGER, we are currently in 5th place and two points off Spurs and a Champions League spot. We have conceded more goals than only Chelsea, City and the awful bore of a team Stoke and have scored only fewer goals than City and United – the top two teams. So all this doom and gloom is severely exaggerated. Don’t get me wrong, we’re still amidst a big struggle but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Wilshere says that we saw glimpses of the old Arsenal against Reading and that anything can and probably will happen before the season is out. If we can go on a run and get some consistency, there is no doubt in my mind that we’ll be closer to the top than currently expected.

Overcoming Jihad

Do you ever feel hesitant about wearing Hijab?
Are you afraid you might not win battle against your self?

Don’t worry! Take the huge step and know that Allah is with you, He will ease this Jihad for you because He knows you sacrificed for his sake.
And as we all know:
“و من أتاني يمشي, أتيته هرولا”
“Who walks towards me I run towards them”
Imagine Allah running towards you?
The very weak, small you?
Could you even imagine if you sacrificed for his sake the amount of Baraka He’ll grant you?
Could you imagine how much positive messages he’ll send you?
Just concentrate and imagine Him with you in every step.. every breath.. every tear.. He is there.
Allah is beautiful but the problem is we, Muslims, don’t know him that well!
If you only knew how much Allah loves you? Your heart will melt from his love.
Did you ever wonder why did you, and only YOU, among all your friends is the one considering Hijab?
Did you ever wonder what brought the thought of Hijab on your mind?

Guess what’s the answer to these questions..
He did.

Think about these questions and ask them to your self more frequently and look for the signs He send you and you’ll be amazed of how generous, kind and loving He is (:

3-2

Wow, it's been two months since my last post, I usually post something at least once a month. I'm currently absolutely blank about what to post. So, I decided to share my thoughts on the latest El Clasico.

I can’t feel good that Barca won because of what Valdes did. I know he didn’t do it on purpose, but that doesn’t do anything to me. I don’t know how we threw everything away like that. If we’d won 3-1, the game at the Bernabeu wouldn’t be filled with as much pressure as it is now, and the boys could go there calmly, and not thinking everything is depending on those 90 minutes. It’s difficult to play at the Bernabeu, so that’s why I am not as happy as I usually would be. Real Madrid is a great team, and them being home is an incredibly good advantage.
The match on itself was good. The first half was kind of boring, though. Real Madrid only defended and waited for a chance to counter-attack Barcelona. Ronaldo was practically playing beside Casillas. The whole first half consisted on Barcelona attacking and Real Madrid defending. Even thought that was great and Barcelona was clearly superior, it didn’t make much of a match. I loved it, though. I loved that Mourinho is a wimpy-ass who was afraid of taking the offensive against Barça. After the 5-0, Mourinho and Real Madrid go to matches against Barcelona with the mentality of defending and waiting for the chance to counter-attack. I think that, if you’re Real Madrid, you can’t afford to think like that. Yes, Barcelona is a very difficult team to play against, but Real Madrid is also a good team. The least that’s expected is for Real Madrid to go look for a goal, to try and try and keep trying. Not hide in their field defending and relying on their goalkeeper.
The second half was clearly more exciting (Hello, 5 goals were scored). The first goal, Ronaldo’s, was just a sheer stroke of luck. And I’m not saying this because I hate his guts, I’m saying this because it’s what I saw. After the goal, Barcelona seemed to wake up and remember they were playing a match against Real Madrid. In the previous half, Barça seemed to be playing not wholeheartedly at all. They did just like they would play a match right before the Sunday BBQ. And that shows how superior Barcelona really is. Anyway, after the Ronaldo goal, Barcelona woke up and started really playing. Pedro scored, a great goal, in fact. Then the penalty, which Messi scored, and, lastly, Xavi’s incredible goal. Everything was nice and peachy after this, which was fine with me to tell you the truth. As a Barcelona fan, there was nothing more I wanted than to end the match that way.  But then Valdes made a mistake. And I know it wasn’t on purpose, as I said before, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t stare at my TV with a WTF look on my face as my anger rose inside me. I mean, if football is your job, and you get paid just to kick balls around all day, you can’t make that mistake. It’s just not acceptable. Media pila! as we would say in Espanol.

LOLOLOL
Barcelona was way better than Real Madrid, in my opinion. When Barcelona had the ball, Real Madrid ran behind it. But when Real Madrid had the ball, Barça players were fresh (because of the amount of passes they make, they don’t get as tired as others) to pressure the rivals into making more mistakes. I’m not saying Real Madrid did an awful match, because they didn’t, but I’m saying Barcelona is superior in more ways than one. Thanks, Coentrao, it’s good to know you can play a fair and clean game. Not. I sincerely hope Busquets, Iniesta, Messi and Pedro are not too bruised after the match.
I liked the starting Barça team. In the defence, it surprised me that Puyol wasn’t playing, though it was reasonable because he’s coming back from an injury. Adriano surprised me, too. I didn’t think he was that good. He played amazing, and so did Pique and Dani Alves. Mascherano was in a category all by himself. His match was incredible, almost too good. Accurate passes, clean defending, one of his best matches yet. Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets. Another wonderful trio. It always amazes me how talented they all are. The only thing I highlight in this is that poor Busquets has hit 4 times in only the first quarter of the game. That’s sad. And not because he was hit (although it is), but because dirty playing was what Real Madrid had to resort to to take the the ball away from Busquets. In the attack, Messi was unbelievable, as always. He didn’t participate as much as he usually does, but that didn’t stop him from scoring and showing everyone how talented he is. It’s really breathtaking. Pedro was good, but leaning onto average, in my opinion. The was he played was not remarkable, except, of course, the goal. That was really awesome. From Alexis, I felt like he just wanted to pick a fight with a Real Madrid player. He made mistakes often, and was always falling (on purpose) and looking for a penalty. I, in particular, do not appreciate this kind of playing, so I didn’t like the way Alexis performed today. I was a little disappointed. Fabregas came in more to the end of the match, so I didn’t see a lot of him. What I saw, though, I liked. Same happened with Jordi Alba. And Tello. Though what surprised me the most about him was his new haircut. I miss long-haired Tello. But I liked how he played. Even though it was for a very short time, he was a good addition to the team.

All in all, it was a very entertaining match, really fun to watch. I  loved how Barca played, I’m really proud of all of them. Some more than others, but still proud of them. It was a tough match, but Barca was able to make the most of their chances and score. So, yeah. #ViscaElBarça!!

The Danes and the Dutch: One of Those Games

I and everyone else in the world (I hope) with the exception of Denmark watched this match hoping and thinking the Dutch were going to win. I am still in shock over the upset Denmark gave the Netherlands with a 1-0 win to give them three points, an important win to have in this Group of Death.

Here's the thing. The Dutch played well. They dominated most of the game and had many, many more chances to score than Denmark had. From Van Persie (16) to Robben (11) to Afellay (20), I could name every player on the Dutch team who tried to score a goal and how close many of them were. For every missed chance we had scored, the Dutch would have blown the Danes out of the water. We had twenty-eight shots total and only eight of them were on target. It's frustrating as a fan to see this happen to such a great team.

I'll be the first to admit Van Persie should have been subbed off in the second half after his dismal performance. Yes, he had chances, and yes, he tried to score on those chances, but compared to how he's player previously and what made him a key part in this Dutch National Team, he didn't show up. Afellay did, beating defenders left and right to make a shot, and Sneijder (10) tried numerous time to set up chances to his teammates or make a goal himself. It's frustrating to try and try and try and not get the result you want and in this case, need.

The only goal of the game and one of only eight shots the Danes made came from Krohn-Dehli (9). I have to give the Danes credit. This was a wonderful play with everyone in the right spot and the right kick from Krohn-Dehli to produce the winning and only goal. Of course, Dutch keeper Stekelenburg (1) should have easily deflected this shot, but he didn't and it cost him precious points.

As a Dutch fan, I still have hope for the Orange. In 1988, twenty four years ago, the Dutch lost their first match of the tournament and went on to win it! Still, the Dutch have plenty of talent, as seen in Afellay's gravity defying shot for goal, and if we keep pushing for goals, we'll get them.

D'Arvit!

Dear Artemis Fowl,

It was ingenious how you caught that fairy. I admire you for doing it although I am genuinely curious as to how you did it. You've also done many other marvelous things. I would like to know how you seem to be able to do anything. I would be honored if you would explain how you managed all of this to me. Genius to genius.

Fascinating People

I’m not fascinated by people who smile all the time. What I find interesting is the way people look when they are lost in thought, when their face becomes angry or serious, when they bite their lip, the way they glance, the way they look down when they walk, when they are alone, when they smirk, the way they half smile, the way they try and hold back tears, the way when their face says they want to say something but can’t, the way they look at someone they want or love…
I love the way people look when they do these things. It’s… beautiful.

neither here nor there

Hello again, dear Reader. Have you thought about your version of the Story today? I won’t let it die; I’ll keep asking.

The Netherlands defeated England today 3-2, with two typically awesome goals by Arjen Robben. You may or may not have known before this very moment that I am quite passionate about Dutch heritage, but now we are all on the same page.

Now, I am about to ask you a question which may make you upset or angry with me, but which I am willing to ask anyway. That is, Is your patriotism just a euphemism for nationalism? And a follow-up (which I won’t get to in this post), What has nationalism led to over and over again in the Story?

When people say (and I used to say this all the time), that “the Indonesia is the best nation on the planet,” what does that even mean?

First of all, since when are there objective qualities that define “the best nation?” Don’t get me wrong, I like many things about this country, and enjoy them to boot. But the best food I have ever tasted was not from this country. The coolest buildings I’ve ever seen were not in this country. The best soccer in the world, wherever it is, is (clearly) not in this country. Indeed, the Lord of the Rings movies were not made in this country.

So, even if there were objective qualities to define “the best nation,” I would say that at the very least the Indonesia fails to meet some of them, and could perhaps not be the best nation in the world. But anyway, that is all a moot point, because all the things I just mentioned were solely tied to my personal preferences. And because everyone has preferences, we all will choose different reasons for liking one country (generally our own) rather than another. I could argue with my friend till I was blue in the face about why the android are better than blackberry. But if I’m going to be realistic (and this is difficult for me to do), then I must realize that the foundational reason I say android is better is simply that I like them better.

Where this gets all the more interesting is that unlike our sports preferences, our (Indonesia) patriotism/nationalism is rarely based on any real observation of other countries. Whereas I have seen Germany play dozens of times, and have seen them beat many countries on a number of occasions. So what kind of right do I have to say anything about better? At least with Germany vs. England I have a body of work to go on. I can appeal to playing styles; I can appeal to coaching personalities; I can appeal to colors. But even then, as I have already said, it comes down to subjective preferences. Many of us who have grown up in the Indonesia have never spent any significant time outside of this country, and yet we act as if we have at least four legs to stand on when we claim that we live in the best nation.

So then, it seems as if what we are really saying when we claim that is, “I’m not really sure what the other countries are like, but the Indonesia is the best because I like it.”

I wish we could just stick with, “I like the Indonesia.”

Because I do, I like this country. I think that in some ways, no matter where I go or don’t go, Indonesia will be my favorite place to be. But I also would love to go visit the Netherlands. And New Zealand. And Rwanda. And Iceland. And Japan. Why? Because there are people there—people who, like you and I, have these crazy and astonishingly different stories to tell. Because they all fit into the Story in some integral way, with a wide array of foods and songs and books and ideas and hurts and pains and diseases and on and on down the list.

And also because I love those black and orange Dutch soccer kits.

The bottom line? Well, keep thinking of your version of the Story. Does it put other people groups down while putting your own on a pedestal? If it does, I really hope you’ll reconsider, because the subtlety of that idea in no way lessons its consequences in our lives.

Start Day With Grateful Heart

Wowow, my first post in 2012! Life is keep going and keeps getting happy and happier. High school has been so much fun, though my friends keep calling me 'emo' when i'm actually is a very happy person. Nah, but that's okay, as long as there is no harm done :D

I've been re-reading this blog and I think this blog needs a little more happiness, because there are many kinda-gloomy-posts here. Sometimes, I forget how lucky I am, to have such wonderful parents as my support system.. and wonderful friends for me whenever I need them...

I take it for granted....

These days, teens are getting gloomier, darker (not skin dark), emo-er, galau-er, and in many possible negative moods in the world. I'm thinking about sharing how to live a happy life. Life is too short for so much sorrow, no?

For galauers, never compare your love story to those in the movies. Those are just written by scriptwriters while yours will be orchestrated by God. Choose it right, cook with logic, season with heart.

And how to start being positive and happy throughout your life?

  • 1. Stop comparing yourself to other people.
  • 2. Don’t put yourself down.
  • 3. Get into the habit of thinking and saying positive things about yourself to yourself.
  • 4. Accept compliments.
  • 5. Use self-help books and websites to help you change your  beliefs.
  • 6. Spend time with positive supportive people.
  • 7. Acknowledge your positive qualities and things you are good at.
  • 8. Be assertive, don’t allow people to treat you with a lack of respect.
  • 9. Be helpful and considerate to others.
  • 10. Engage in work and hobbies that you enjoy.

Every time a negative thought comes into your mind, stop whatever you’re doing. Take a deep breath and tell yourself that it’ll be okay. Close your eyes and envision for yourself a light. It is up to you to keep that light glowing fiercely. Open your mind to the endless possibilities which you know you can achieve. Smile and let it be known to the whole world that you are ready. Ready to take that step. Ready to proceed. Ready to take on anything. With that thought in mind, dispel all those negative thoughts, because everything which has been said is the truth. You can do it.

Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices #2) by Cassandra Clare

“We live and breathe words.”

It seems such a cliché manner in opening this, but I think the quote sufficiently sums up how I feel about this book – this series. I do not simply read this series, but live and breathe the words. In my head, the characters exist perfectly, as though they’ve always been a part of my world. I picture them wholly and imagine them as distant friends of mine, recalled from a memory. I know, I’m being corny. Forgive me; this book has affected me, and I think I’m still under its spell.

Despite the mockery poked at Cassandra Clare, despite the way her books are scorned, this is possibly one of my favorite books I’ve read – and certainly the best book I feel Clare has written. What sets The Infernal Devices apart from The Mortal Instruments is a number of factors, but most notably how the writing seems so different. It’s not something I can quite pinpoint, but simply to note she has an eloquence. Certainly, one can credit the Victorian London era for this, as her writing certainly fits in the era in which she writes. And it’s something I absolutely love. This simple trick immerses me into this world, set so many years before me.

I’m serious. I LOVED this book.

From the get-go, readers are thrown into the plot. In the beginning, we learn the overall push of the story. The end of Clockwork Angel was a storm of disaster, with the death of De Quincey, the escape of Mortmain, and the revelation that the Institute housed Nate the traitorous and lead to the betrayal and the deaths of Agatha and Thomas. Because of this, Charlotte has only two weeks to locate Mortmain and prove to the Clave she can successfully run the Institute – or else Bennedict Arnold Lightwood will take control of it. And it is with this daunting task we meet again with Tessa and her makeshift family.
Two new characters are introduced, as replacements to the late Agatha and Thomas, though we unfortunately learn very little of them. Knowing Clare, I have a feeling we’ll learn more about them in our final book.

Something I feel Clare really did well in this book was the way the everyone had their own subplot, in contribution to the overall arc of the book. Poor Tessa, alone in this world and abandoned by her brother, has forged a family with the members of the London. But she still doesn’t know who – or what – she is. Mortmain wants her for something and she has no idea what that something is. It’s incredibly disconcerting to her and she continues her search to learn what she is.

The ending of Clockwork Angel makes more sense as we follow Will around the book. Far more likable in this book than the last, readers learn of the burden he’s carried on his shoulders for five years, and we even get a glimpse into his past. Anyone who disliked Will or felt apathetic towards him before now will surely thaw as they get to know him better. I’m standing proof! As someone who liked Will enough, I find myself incredibly drawn to him.

Even Sophie has a storyline! A very well deserved one, too, at that.

“Trains are great dirty smoky things," said Will. "You won't like it." Tessa was unmoved. "I won't know if I like it until I try it, will I?

One of my favorite parts of the book, though, is where the storyline takes us. Finally, we travel outside of the London Institute. We take a train to Yorkshire, so perfectly described, you really are there. Clare’s craft for descriptions creates the world around you. In desperation, we travel to the slums of London. We visit an elaborate, dangerous masquerade. Readers are taken on a ride, and oh, it’s a beautiful ride at that. Through our travels, readers finally start to learn more about Mortmain. While little plot seems to take place, a lot of the book is discovery and information, which is important in finding Mortmain in the first place.

And in uncovering Mortmain’s motives and past is the most painful discovery for the London Institute: that someone of their group has betrayed them.

Of course, the main storyline of which everyone speaks is the love triangle. Recall that I’m not a fan of triangles, as I find them overused, sloppily-done, and unnecessary. However, Clare seems to have done the nearly impossible in the creation of this love triangle. It is, to say the very least, the perfect triangle. We don’t have two boys fighting over one girl, but a triangle with an important relationship at every point, and it makes me anxious to see how everything will pan out because someone will be hurt. Maybe multiple someones.

From the beginning of Clockwork Angel, we have been entertained by the reckless passion of Tessa and Will, and this certainly continues in the second installment. Tessa, to my immense pleasure, deviates from the typical YA heroine, though, and while readers may be upset in her self-preservation, it is something that only makes me love her more. The more we’re in Will’s head, though, the more we come to understand his actions, and the terrible things he has said and done in the previous book.

Less notable to many, but unmissed by this self-professed Jem fangirl, in Clockwork Angel was his subtly growing affections for Tessa, and of course this continues as well. For all who found Jem boring, they’ll find a rather entertaining side to him that proves nice boys aren’t always droll. In Will’s distance to Tessa, Jem keeps her company and helps alleviate her homesickness by showing her around London.

“Will has always been the brighter burning star, the one to catch attention — but Jem is a steady flame, unwavering and honest. He could make you happy.”

When you think of it that way, I can’t blame Tessa for being torn. Two beautiful boys whom each appeal to you in a different way? How does anyone make a choice?

“Our souls are knit. We are one person, James.”

For me, though, the heart of the relationship is the one centered around Jem and Will. Nevermind the parabataisattraction to the same girl. What I love dearly about this story and this triangle, is the way these two love each other. For so long, the only person Will has ever loved is Jem, and despite his moods, despite his “habits”, Jem loves Will dearly. They are fiercely dedicated to each other, and their worlds don’t just center around the other, but overlap.

It’s a beautiful relationship, but a rather scary one.

As we recall, Jem is dying. He is sustained only by a drug that as well as keeps him alive, kills him. The impending death of Will’s parabatai is further explored, in a heart breaking manner. More than I enjoy Will or Jem’s affections for Tessa, I love the relationship between these boys, and the beautiful relationship they share. I do, in this moment, declare them my brOTP. It is Jem’s practical acceptance of his impending death that really makes me feel for the parabatais relationship, and it makes me fear, for the way Will depends upon him.

“Someday, Will, I will go where none can follow me, and I think it will be sooner rather than later. Have you ever asked yourself why I agreed to be your parabatai?”

Of course, the triangle is the culmination of these points. It is the web of affections and relationships which threaten to drive the three apart. Beautiful is the three together, and how effectively they work together and with what ease the three of them have struck friendship. The banter is playful, if not competitive at times, and often lends to a laugh. Even better is how they look out for each other and how obvious all three care deeply for the others.

"I've never swum naked in the Thames before, but I know I wouldn't like it."

"But think how entertaining for sightseers," said Tessa, and she saw Jem duck his head to hide the quick flash of his grin.”

With this relationship in place, it is easy to love everyone, and it is easy to just want everyone happy – because we all know that in a love triangle, someone will be hurt.

Everything about this book is beautiful and so well done. Clare has perfectly created Victorian London around me, in a most vivid way. The dialogue remains witty and delightful, with most of the funniest lines belonging to Will, whose sense of humor seems to shine even more this time around. So much of this book is composed of great character development. Already, Clare had had a cast of fantastic characters, but with this book, we further explore them and learn more about them. More complex layers are revealed, and for me, by the end of the book, it was nearly impossible not to love the cast. I was converted. I went from preferring Jem to Will to loving them dearly in their own way (even if my bias remains with Jem.)

Do I even dare warn you of the impending emotional crisis? I'll just warn you - some of you may need tissues. Clare plays with your heart like a puppeteer and her puppets and numerous passages broke my heart in some kind of way. Even Clare herSELF cried and SHE wrote this!

Clare has absolutely outdone herself with this book. I find it far superior to TMI and encourage anyone who was not entirely sold on Clare’s other series to try the prologue, if only for the fantastic setting and the brilliantly complex characters. Though it seems little plot is really accomplished in this book, it feels like so much has happened (and trust that quite a bit of action ensues) by the end of the book. And with the sheer amount of character development accrued on all parts, it more than exceeds the middle book syndrome. Sequels are rarely better than the first, but I am in love with Clockwork Prince. It is, by far, my favorite of Clare’s work, and deserves its place amongst my favorite books.

All fans of Clare will enjoy this book, and I encourage anyone to try this one. The writing is beautiful, the characters are all so likable and complicated, and despite the romantic tensions, the book fortunately lacks the severe amounts of dramatic angst I’m so wary of from TMI.

 Go. Go read this!

‘o you have torn all my life to pieces’

I’m in the process of reading "Tess of the d’Urbervilles" by Thomas Hardy. Got this book at Gramedia and the only copy left. Even though the book condition couldn't be called brand new, but I've been searching this book since a long time ago. Sadly this is taking me longer than normal. When I’m sick (even if it’s just a small cold) I don’t concentrate as well so reading becomes a chore sometimes. Especially when reading a book that isn’t just plain “eye candy”. This isn’t a simple book to read. It takes thought (like most classics). I can see why Thomas Hardy wasn’t received well by the critics of his day. Victorian era England was rather stodgy. Anyway, I rarely love classic romances like this (though this isn’t strictly a romance… it’s more of life of the everyday person - every day people do have love lives too!). PLUS- I don’t have to worry about running into the smuttiness that is in a lot of modern “romance” books (I just call them smut books). Aand I want this edition.
I love how Thomas Hardy describes Tess’s face from Angel Clare’s point of view. The reader can fully tell how much he, Angel, cares for her. Makes me want to sigh deeply *sigh*

(from Phase the Second: Maiden No More chapter 24):

How very lovable her face was to him. Yet there was nothing ethereal about it: all was real vitality, real warmth, real incarnation. And it was in her mouth that this culminated. Eyes almost as deep and speaking he had seen before, and cheeks perhaps as fair; brows as arched, a chin and throat almost as shapely; her mouth he had seen nothing to equal on the face of the earth. To a young man with the least fire in him that little upward lift in the middle of her red top lip was distracting, infatuating, maddening.

And all this while this young man was milking a cow and watching her milk another cow… Who knew a dairy farm could be so romantic? *roll eyes* :)

While she carries the burdens of the devil raping her and the angel leaving her. .

He still continues to go on his journey. Continuing on to his dreams.

I WANNA FIND FLUFFY D:

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is without a doubt, one of my favourite movies of all time. Not only is the music amazing, but you can’t help but fall in love with Michael Cera. Honestly, he is just adorable and awkward and awesome… Anyways…

I wish that at least one night of my life will end up like this movie. I don’t give a damn about the Notebook… I want a Nick and Norah-esque night. Preferably with Michael Cera, but that’s definitely pushing the boundaries of reality right now. I just want a night of adventure in NYC with my cool friends looking for a secret cool show for a cool band.. is that too much to ask?

To many, this post is pointless - sorry i’m not sorry - but i’m watching the movie right now, and so it is on the forefront of my mind. And this is a blog. My blog. So i can post whatever I want. Even if it is pointless rambling, better to put it on the world-wide-web for everyone to see right?

Opens at Nightfall Closes at Dawn

One aspect of the novel that I really love is the abundant journal keeping and writings from many of my favorite characters. They contain their longings, memories, magic and secrets.
****************

It started with a suicide note.

“The sealed envelope hangs from the second topmost button of her coat, until Prospero arrives.”

and continues

“He copies down sections of books, writes out words and symbols he does not understand at first but that become intimately familiar beneath his ink-stained fingers, formed again and again in increasing steady lines.”

“He begins each notebook the same way, with a detailed drawing of a tree inscribed with a black ink inside the front cover.”

- Marco (at least that’s what he named himself, and maybe that’s all that matters.)
*
“Pages and pages of observations, recounting his experiences, mostly so he will not forget them but also to capture something of the circus on paper, something he can hold on to.”

- Herr Thiessen
*
“After the circus departed, he wrote down every detail he could remember about it so it would not fade in his memory.”

- Bailey
*
“…takes a closer look at the blueprints and sketches hanging from shelves and tacked to mirrors and paintings and windows. Some are complete rooms, others are bits of exterior architecture or elaborate archways and halls.”

- Chandresh
*

” the drafting table by the window is all but hidden in the meticulous ordered chaos of papers and diagrams and blueprints.”

- Mr. Ethan Barris

“I want a story,” he says.
“A story?”
“I want this story. Your story.”
